Toronto based Victoria Malloy is a multi-disciplinary content creator, creative and freelance writer (with bylines in The Zoe Report, Coveteur and Well+Good to name a few). Most recently, she established her blog Terram Primum, where she shares sustainability-centred conversations, stories and must-haves with her audience.
Below, we had the opportunity to chat with Victoria about her matriarchs, style inspirations and life lessons from her mom.
When I look at these old photos of [my mom], I see a woman who is carefree, with a lust for life.
My mom has a heart of gold. And she wears it on her sleeve – whether on a set of nursing scrubs or a thrifted Valentino.
What is the most valuable life lesson you have learned from your matriarch?
To live life to the fullest and dance to the beat of my own drum. To celebrate life’s wins, no matter how small, and to always have my wits about me.
What characteristics about your mom do you look up to?
Her altruistic nature, and how she’s always the first person to extend a helping hand to someone who needs it. Her ability to keep a level head under pressure. Her positive attitude and unwavering belief that everything has a way of working out.
Never one to shy away from bold choices, her style has always gone against the grain and she wears it with unshakable confidence. She’s always opted for one-of-a-kind pieces over fast fashion and she makes them look effortlessly cool.
How do you recognize the impact your mom has left on your own life?
I have always recognized characteristics of my mom woven into me, and I can see the values she instilled in me come through in the way I make decisions; the way I experience life’s pleasures; and the way I pursue my passions.
What is one memory you have of being with your mom?
One of my earliest memories, which is as vivid as if it was yesterday, was bath time. My mom would wrap me up in a towel and we’d sing “she’s fresh, and exciting, so exciting to me” a line from “Fresh” by Kool & The Gang. Not exactly a song from an after school special, but it was fun to sing and it stuck.
